Energy Transition in Central and Eastern Europe: Challenges and Investment Opportunities

As the European Union advances towards its 2050 Net Zero targets, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is emerging as a critical hub for the energy transition. Historically dependent on coal and natural gas, the region is now witnessing a transformative shift, driven by dynamic growth, rising energy demand, and significant investment potential.

Even before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, CEE countries had begun accelerating renewable energy adoption. This momentum continues, with forecasts projecting 90 GW of investments in wind, solar, and battery storage across the region between 2025 and 2030.

Poland stands at the forefront of this transition. As the largest energy market in (CEE), its presidency of the EU Council in early 2025 offers a pivotal chance to influence the EU’s energy priorities. Despite its strong reliance on coal, the country is increasingly focusing on expanding renewable energy investments. Achieving this will require enhanced grid flexibility to integrate renewables while ensuring supply security, with natural gas, large-scale batteries, and nuclear energy likely to play supporting roles.

Elsewhere in CEE, the energy transition is unfolding at varying speeds. The Baltic States are advancing offshore wind development, while Romania and the Balkans are increasingly attractive for solar developers. For investors, a key question remains: how to identify the most promising opportunities across these diverse markets?

Regulatory barriers, infrastructure limitations, and geopolitical uncertainties must be addressed through coordinated efforts among policymakers, industry leaders, and investors.

The inaugural Aurora Energy Transition Summit Warsaw will provide the platform for these critical discussions. Gathering senior leaders from across the CEE energy sector, the summit will focus on practical solutions to advance the region’s energy transition, secure investment, and enhance competitiveness in a sustainable global economy.
